Introduction to The Blog

Published by Jason Yang on

“Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.” – Tom Lehrer

In February 2020, I was approached by a publishing company (Bagel Books) to write a piano book aimed at adult beginners. The book was to be titled ‘The Step-By-Step Guide to Effortlessly Learn Piano in 7 Days or Less Even if You’ve Never Played an Instrument Before.’

Learning piano is not ‘effortless’ and cannot be done in ‘7 days or even less’ ESPECIALLY ‘if you’ve never played an instrument before.’

Please don’t be fooled to think otherwise.

So, despite an attractive payday, I completely disagreed with what they were doing and quickly turned them down.

I got thinking. If they trusted me to write a money making book for them, then why not write my own? So I started waking up at 5:30 am to work on my own book.

About 80% of the way through, I began thinking what’s the point of spending so much time writing a book, that no one would ever read?

So, I decided to turn the book’s content into short blog posts.

Now when I teach, I often refer to this blog to clarify things.

It helps my students get the most out of our piano lessons.

My blog is structured under 5 categories:

  1. Getting Started – posts to read if you’re on the fence about learning piano
  2. Music Theory – must knows before even pressing a piano key
  3. Piano Basics – more music theory but specifically piano based
  4. Piano Technique – things to watch out for and practice
  5. Pieces – tips and tricks for some of the pieces I teach

You can easily browse by category via the Sidebar to the right –>

If you have any questions whatsoever about any of the things covered in any of my posts, please just leave a comment and I’ll respond ASAP.

Happy Learning 🙂
